Max 7 in a peer2peer network. 16 workstations. I'm the databse admin. We have had Max 7 for two weeks and apart from a couple of error messages which I'm trying to sort out now, the biggest problem is that no-one can access the data on the file server (gateway) until I log on and open up the dtata base. I have a work station. I'm not using the file server.
There should be no reason for me to have to log on before anyone else. The server is running 18-20 per day and is not shut down until close of business. Any ideas?

What precisely do you mean? Do they get an error message? Does their machine hang? Be more specific.

>The server [...] is not shut down until close of business.

If it is a server, why is it being shut down at all? (BTW, that would explain your 3006 errors.) Remember that the Workgroup Engine has to be running on the gateway machine for the other machines to access the data. (p.s. That's where your Maximizer licenses should be installed, too.)

I have had similar problem albeit only on a 5 user network. The Maximizer installation instructions do not even mention how the Pervasive database stuff works, and this is where my problem was. Basically after realising that a floating gateway is used, and looking at what the *.LOC files contained, I was able to get our system working independently of any client computer.

I guess you've probably already looked at this, but thought I'd throw in what little knowledge I have!

To run a Maximizer database from a server using the Workgroup version not the Client/Server version, you will need to install Maximizer on the Server then go to PVSW/BIN and right click on the file W3DBSMGR (it should be called an Application if you can't see *.exe on the end)

Copy it and then Paste it as a Shortcut into your Windows start up folder;
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 9X or ME

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 2000 or XP

When it is in your start up folder, Right click it then select properties>Shortcut and where it says Target it should say;

C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE -SRDE

(You add the -SRDE)

Click apply and then ok

Reboot the machine

Next go to Start>Programs>Pervasive>Pervasive.SQL 2000i>Utilities>Gateway Locator and read the attachment 'ESTABLISHING THE GATEWAY.doc'

Finally, you will need to apply your Maximizer licences to this machine in the Administrator program.

This sets up your server as the Gateway machine, but you can specify an independant machine as the gateway, but it has to be running all the time and also be the one that you do the above instructions on.

Thanks to all for the replies and support. I eventually reached Max support. Found out that all the work stations had .LOC files and the gateway pc was not assigned as the gateway.
Got rid of all the .LOC files and assigned the gateway and all is OK.

Should consider getting the client server, you will run into problems if all 16 try to access Max in a peer to peer at the same time.

As a rule 16 is too many for peer to peer
