Help! I have a database that crashes consistantly every 3 weeks. The server component is on a 98 box and running betrive 6.15 the client is on all the workstations and they are 98 boxes. Plenty of memory ect. The workstations are using novell client 3.1 and the 98 box running the server side is using client 3.2. I just found out that 3.2 is not supported (per e-mail from max tech support. This could be causing the crashes on this datatbase!? Any other ideas? I plan to unc the client and move back to 3.1. Also checking to see if lan drivers are current.

How many users do you have?

From what you say although you refer to a 'server' your not running a client server btrieve database, just using the standard workstation engine.

This engine can support quite large groups of users in some environments (I had a client with 50 users on a Novell Lan) but its not ideal and if you have more than 8-10 users getting errors on a regular basis is not uncommon. The problem is that all the users have all the files open. One problem PC, Net card or whatever and the files will get damaged, usually the user and column files. You just have to get your IT infrastructure as tidy as possible to try and minimize the problem. The damage can be completely avoided by installing the Client server engine which will happily support over 100 users.

Unfortunatly the 6.15 engine is no longer available from most sources (we can still get it) and is no longer supported by the manufacturer. For this reason you may need to consider upgrading to Maximizer Enterprise 2000 which has a choice of the (more reliable) Pervasive.SQL 2000 workgroup engine or the full server engine.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your response and suggestions!! I have only 9 users..7 are local and 2 dial-in to access maximzer. I did realize this was not a client server situation when I went back to the site yesterday. They (the client) were refering to the 98 box as the maximizer server and that threw me off. I will be tidying up things today everyone has a different novell client etc. I understand that the novell client is not a great idea in this case and maybe should move to microsofts netware client (more stable). This suggestion came from maximizer in a quick phone conversation. I will check out all lan drivers as well and just tidy up as you suggested. I will speak with them regarding the upgrade as a possible solution. Can't say thank you enough times!!! I will keep you posted about what I did and if it works in case it can help someone else out. This was my first run in with Maximizer Enterprise. One more thing, it sounds from your response that the 6.15 engine is not an option...unavailabe and not supported to boot. Upgrade may be their best bet after cleaning up and just getting things as stable as possible. Again thank you so very much, I'll be in touch.

Hi Pauline,

Although the Microsoft client is fine, for Novell networks, Pervasive used to recommend the Novell client. But get the latest and get everyone on the same version. Make sure there are no NE2000 compatible drivers always use the correct driver for the network cards whenever possible.

If the dial-up are trying to run maximizer over a phone line they could easily be the cause of some of the problems if they do not wait for maximizer to close properly before disconnecting.
