Hi:

We are currently running Maximizer 7.5 Enterprise with a SQL database. One of the partners is leaving the company and starting his own two person office and will not have a server. Can someone tell me how to move the SQL database to Maximizer 9 in a workgroup environment? Step by step instructions would be very appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Mike

Time is money. In my opinion, it's well worth the $100 or so difference just to use Enterprise. If they can't afford $500/seat for Enterprise, they obviously can't afford to start a business.

If they have 2 users, they should use Enterprise, because they will need some sort of synchronization. Maximizer Inc will sometimes object, but then ask them how they can synchronize the database...silence.

Besides, if they're successful, they'll probably have a 3rd or 4th user soon anyway, and will save a lot of headaches by starting with Enterprise right away.
Now if you are talking about SQL-> Enterprise Pervasive, I have no experience, but I would expect it to work if they just backup the old database, then restore and upgrade in the new system.

Good Morning,

It is possible to move a SQL Database back down to Pervasive but it is not an especially simple task. I would suggest that you contact a Maximizer Business Partner who can assist you with the process.

You can run what is called an Enterprise Workgroup, however to do so one of the machines in the workgroup will have to be nominated as the Pervasive Gateway, this means that the nominated machine will hold the license information and database and this machine will have to be running for the others to be able to use Maximizer. Its not an ideal solution but it will work.

For a small group of users I'd still recommend getting a Small Business Server to act as a central server because it becomes easier to manage backups and such from one machine that way.

I do see two documents in the knowledge base regarding installing Enterprise 7 and 7.5 in a workgroup environment, but nothing for later versions.
If you can do the installation, is there a document that shows how you restore the SQL database from Enterprise 7.5 to the new workgroup installation? This is where I am confused. If there is no SQL in the workgroup environment, how is the restore done?

This is why my suggestion is that you get a business partner involved. There is no way to restore a SQL database into a Pervasive database, however the data itself can be moved from one to the other but it requires a good understanding of Maximizer and a reasonable amount of time to get it done.

There is no documentation or manual entries that explain how to do this as it is considered to be the kind of thing that requires a consultant to assist you in.
