Im sorry to keep posting, but im in the process of upgrading my 98 systems that access Max 6 on a Peer to Peer setup.

Max runs fine on windows 2000 but here is the issue:

If a windows 2000 system opens max first (makes the initial lock) then no one else can access the db. It just hangs at the screen trying to connect and NEVER does. This happens to 2000 pro and windows 98 clients if the initial connection was made from windows 2000.

Now if one of the systems still waiting to be upgraded (Windows 98) makes the initial connection, then all users connect fine. Multiple win98 and multiple 2000 pro max clients all share the DB which is shared on a server.

1) Network is fine as all systems have a drive mapped, and even if they "hang / stall" I can access the mapped drive or browse to it on the network fine.

2) Max has its user lisences installed which is enough for everyone

3) Either of the two upgraded windows 2000 pro will lock the db and keep everyone else out, so it must be 2000 specific.

4) 2000 pro systems if they where the first to access it works A1 .. just no one else can update.

5) 2000 systems have all SPs and patches for windows.

6) I have reinstalled 3 times and reapplied lisences and still no go.

Thanks so much. I have read the forums and have searched the KB .. I have also tried Google.

Where is your data? Have you mapped a drive to this folder? One guy tried that and it never worked. ie.. your max folder is the root of f:\ Try sharing a folder like "shared" and put your maximizer folder in there... ie.. shared\maximizer
then in maximizer your data will be setup as m:\maximizer.
My single user version of maximizer 5.0 can only be run under a user with admin rights. Well I've been reading some posts and I see Power Users can run max?! Are your users Power Users or admins? good luck... we all need it with maximizer. if my data wasn't created with max... i'd use something else. anyone know how I can get me data out of max and into something else? thx.

I have tried having a folder under the mapped drive and have tried having the DB right under the mapped drive. No Dice.

To run max as a non admin under 2k, log on the system as admin or domain admin. Bring up comp management-admin tools-groups.

Dble click power users, then ADD a domain group that the user is a member of to that, or you could put the domain user account in it. I go with groups myself.

Now please if anyone knows why the windows 2000 systems would be locking the database in such a way that NO ONE ELSE can access the database please help.

The entire domain and servers are 2000 except for the few remaining 98 systems that are being upgraded.

Thanks

Trent,

Have you verified your installation against the instructions in the documents referenced here?

In particular, have you used the Gateway Locator utility to specify the machine that will act as the gateway?

Also, have you placed a shortcut to...

c:\pvsw\bin\w3dbsmgr.exe -btrv

...in the Startup folder on each workstation to pre-load the Pervasive workgroup engine? (In the system tray you should see a little workstation icon with a green light.)

Im going through what you posted now Gord .. So far everything was done except establish a gateway.

I have preloaded the pervasive but things seemed to work before without a gateway.

Quick question about that: The server holding the max db doesnt actually have max installed.

Do I NEED this installed? I never did in the past but im thinking the best place for a pervasive gateway would be the server holding the DB.

Ill see if i can just install the pervasive portion of max on that server maybe.

Any tips from your experience will be appreciated and hopefully this will do the trick.

Thanks again and Ill keep posting as I work Smile

Hi, Trent.

I always preferred to have the machine hosting the data files be the gateway machine as well. However, that's not a requirement.

You can do a stand-alone install of the full Workgroup engine from the WGE folder on the Maximizer CD, or failing that you can (still??) get it via FTP as described in "Pervasive 2000 Workgroup Setup.doc". That will give you the workgroup engine without having to install Maximizer.

The machine that acts as the gateway is the one that requires the Pervasive Workgroup licenses. On that machine, the User Count Administrator (w32ucadm.exe) will tell you how many Pervasive licenses are registered.

BTW, I also had success with running the Workgroup Engine as a service on the gateway machine via the SRVANY utility. That allows the WGE to run on a server without setting the machine to AutoLogon (as is required if the engine is loaded via the Startup group).

Gord

Thanks yet again .. the system worked fine with no gateway with 98 .. now that 2000 is in the mix it seems i HAD to set one.

I dont see pervasive on my cd anywhere in the folder you specified however Ill checkout the FTP.

I appreciate your help yet again .. things seem to be going now fine.

Again to append to my thank you post i appreciate a resource such as this a great deal. When it comes to maximizer this is the best place to get help, and get informed.

I'm having to re-instal Maximizer Enterprise 6... Neither the Pervasive 2000 or Maximizer CD doesn't have the folder to install as workgroup. The ftp link no longer works. Does anyone have a source for the needed installation files?

raymillr, I am afraid that Maximizer Software discontinued Maximizer version 6 earlier this year, they are no longer supplying service packs or replacement disks for this version of the product. I would recommend you contact your business partner and discuss possible upgrade solutions.
