In Maximizer 5, if I was pointing to a Contact, if I use the Company merge field, I would get the name of the company. In Maximizer 8, the Company field is blank unless I am actually on the company entry.
I'm doing this with Word, but I see the same results in the Maximizer word processer
(Action->Write A Letter and then Tools->Merge Field followed by Tools->Merge Document)

How can I get the company name? I have several Word macros that I use that requires this.

thanks,
Peter

Hi, Peter.

I just tried this with Maximizer Enterprise 8 (Pervasive Workgroup) and it works for me. Try creating a new Address Book and doing a simple test there. Maybe something got a bit weird when your database was upgraded.... Confused

Thanks for responding. It turned out to be a problem with just that contact. I have no idea what the problem was or if it was entered differently. I created a new contact with the same exact name and deleted the old one and everything works fine now. This contact was entered with Max 8 and not converted.

Hey Gord,

I have a similar problem in that when I am highlighting a contact, I need access to a User-defined field" which is associated with the company, so I can write

John Smith
Company Address
Account number

The account number is a UDF of the COMPANY, not of the contact.

Hi, Pasta.

It sounds like you want to enable "New Contact inherits user-defined fields" in your default entry. That will take care of new ones.

For the existing ones you'll need to do some Global Edits, or perhaps hire a Business Partner to build you a little utility that will propagate the Company/Individual UDFs down to the Contact level.

Hi Gord,

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried it out. When the client inherits the UDF, it has the same value as the Company, but there is no way (that I know of) to make that field un-editable, so I cannot guarantee that it contains the right information.

Also, in a relational database, its a kinda clunky solution: the Account Number is a property of the Organization, and not of the individual contacts. This should be stored once per record, not 20 or 30 times! (This rant is not aimed at you!)

All I need is to be able to access Organization UDFs whilst I have a contact selected. But, I think this is not possible...

Thanks again for your help,

Pasta

Hi, Pasta.

You're right - it would be a useful feature. Please consider submitting it to suggestions@maximizer.com.
