When I shutdown or reboot my computer (XP), I get an error "Pervasive.SQL Workgroup Engine: Remote and/or local applications are active and conneted..."
What do I need to shut down first to avoid this error? |

If you are using MaxFinder or MaxAlarm they *might* be causing it. However, I've seen it happen (a lot) even when they are not installed.
TTBOMK it is a timing issue. It takes several seconds/minutes for the Pervasive engine to drop the connection after Maximizer shuts down. There's nothing you can do about it, really, except... - get into the habit of shutting down Maximizer a couple of minutes before you intend to shut down the machine, or - click "Yes" (or "OK", or whatever) to tell Pervasive that yes, you *do* want it to shut down. |

Thanks, Gord. It happens even when Max has been off for hours. I think the pervasive engine just stays on. It's really not a big deal, I guess.

I get the same thing GoBlue - it's somewhat annoying to have it come up every time you shutdown the computer. Our users here just have to put up with it, just have to confirm for them that it is ok to end task when it pops up.

If you look this error up on the Maximizer Knowledge Base you get a pointer to an article in the Pervasive Software knowledge base, here is a copy of that article.
(The original can be found at: Pervasive Article 00014681) Solution Details Solution ID: 00014681 Pop-up message about application failing appears if you exit the Replication Engine then immediately exit the Pervasive.SQL Workstation/Workgroup Engine. Problem Description: Pop-up message about application failing appears if you exit the Replication Engine then immediately exit the Pervasive.SQL Workstation/Workgroup Engine. When you shut down the Pervasive.SQL Workstation/Workgroup Engine using the tray icon immediately after you shut down the Pervasive.SQL Replication Engine, you could see the following pop-up message: "Local applications are active and connected to the Pervasive database. If you chose to shut down anyway, applications will fail with unpredictable results and the system may not be properly cleaned up. Shutdown anyway? " Problem Environment: Data Exchange Known Issue Pervasive.SQL 2000 WG Pervasive.SQL 2000 WS Cause of this problem: The Replication event handler mechanism is still holding files open. The complete exit of the Replication Engine takes a few moments. Solution Notes: Click "Yes" on the pop-up message. No damage results because the event handlers will close anyway in a few moments. Note: The message is legitimate if you have not exited the Replication Engine. Only in that case should you click "No." No fix anticipated at this time. Published: May 2001_ |

We had this problem and we "fixed" it by running pervasive as a service. There is a file called PVSW.EXE which you drop into you c:\pvsq\bin folder then double click to run it. In TOOLS - WGE as Service type install then it runs Pervasive as as service and no more shutdown error messages.

Where exactly is the file PVSW.EXE? I have searched my entire computer and cannot find it. Dan P. Beckner |

Its a piece of software available from Pervasive Software, it should be downloaded and saved into C:\PVSW\Bin then you can run the PVSW.exe and use the options in there to change the WGE to run as a service.
