Opportunity not generating Unique ID

When I drag a contact to the opportunity tab, it fails to generate a UNIQUE ID. Is there something I need to do to activate this? Please help!!

Yes, creating IDs automatically is set under preferences>system or something like that.
Log in as MASTER and check out one of the buttons in Preferences.
