Disabling the OCR software fixed it.

I did not have Omnipage Pro (as suggested in the Multiactive article) but the effect was the same.

Also, for any other readers, I did NOT get all of the other symptoms - so if you are getting just one or two, it is also worth trying the suggested fixes.
