Trouble connecting to my address book

Hi there.

I was about to export my database and went into the administrator and the next thing I knew my address book disappeared.
I can see the bak file on my desktop but every time I try to reconnect to it Max shuts down.
I think part of the problem is that the file was formerly on a server and in my local list the files are all server files and not showing the local address book file on my desktop.
Any hope here?!
