Hi,
I've been using Maximizer 97is for several years now, it's invaluable, both for my own use and for clients. Now I've got a really weird problem.
SYMPTOMS: If I add an alphanumeric UDF to a record, I am duly prompted for a value, but then nothing turns up in the list of UDFs. I had thought it was a corrupted DB - but I scrubbed Max97 completely from the box, removing registry keys also, rebooted, and installed a Max6.0 trial version. I get exactly the same behaviour on the "My Address Book" DB!

I can add existing "table" UDFs, which have already been defined -- e.g. I can "Add UDF" and select "Industry" and pick an existing value -- but I cannot create new table-based UDFs: I create the initial UDF, but cannot add Items to it.

The very similar dialog that appears for "Edit List" operations behaves in the same way. I (Max 6, "My Address Book" DB) create Contact for New Company, drop down the Salutation box and choose Edit List, Type "Sq." into the dialog and press OK -- and Sq is not added to the list.

When creating a New Address Book folder, then choosing Open Address Book Folder, I get a list with some blank entries in. These can be selected, Properties show that the directory is correct, but they have no description.

POSSIBLE CULPRITS: TAS Books SBE (accounting s/w) is on the box (not on previous machines where Max97 has been fine) and also uses Btrieve, though a much earlier version. Is anyone else successfully using Max6/97 with TAS?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

System is a Win2k SP1 Athlon 1GHz with 512Mb RAM.

Thanks,
Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

I will try and answer your questions in sequence.
Maximizer 6 runs well under Windows 2000 but some video anomalies have been reported on occasions. I would recommend contacting your Video card manufacturer to obtain an updated Video driver.

Regarding TAS we are running TAS and Maximizer 6.0 Ent in the office here without problems, we have also installed this combination on customer sites without trouble.

Contact Sales on 01635 570970 to discuss your requirements.

I had a similar problem just the other day and narrowed it down to PowerDesk. If you are using a matrox video card, try the following:

- open the Windows Task Manager (Right Click on the task bar and select Task Manager)
- Switch to the Processes tab, highlight pdesk.exe and click End Process.
- After confirming killing the process, try your UDFs in Maximizer.

If you are able to edit the UDFs you had problems with before, then pdesk.exe is the problem. It's auto-loaded in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. You can remove it from there if your are Registry savvy, but be warned that pdesk.exe loads again if you click "advanced.." under display properties. Best solution is to look for an updated video driver.

Thanks for the replies -- but I've upgraded to the latest versions of the video driver (ATI Rage Fury Pro) and also, for good measure, the monitor driver (Sony E400) - ATI insisted I install MS DirectX 8, so that's in too. I still get exactly the same behaviour in Maximizer 6.

System was restarted after each installation, and again before testing.

This makes Maximizer quite unusable -- I cannot add alpha UDFs or edit any lists. Until this is tracked down I cannot suggest Maximizer to my clients, so I've got to start checking out the alternatives. I can't even use it successfully for my own stuff. Rats, rats, RATS.

Is it worth contacting Maximizer directly about this? I've applied for the upcoming beta programme, but since the same problem applies to both Max97is and Max6 I don't have high hopes of this resolving the issue.

I'd be happy to test any other suggestions others might have?

Thanks for your help,
Thomas.
Good idea - but I have admin privileges (i.e. user "thomasn" belongs to Administrators).

Anything else I can try? Might a later version of Pervasive solve the problem (or will Max6 only use the version with which it ships)?

ArronM:

You wrote "I had a similar problem just the other day and narrowed it down to PowerDesk".
How did you narrow it down? I was intending to create a new user (in Administrators), log in as newuser and install Max6 and retest. Then just End Process on one process after another in Task Manager, starting with the video support, until Max6 behaved itself. Is that what you tried?

Thanks again,
Thomas.
Thomas, that's exactly what I did, and I was able to sucessfully enter an UDF value after killing pdesk.exe. Hopefully one of the proceses in your list is the culprit.

BTW, it would be counter-productive to kill W3DBSMGR.EXE and MAXWIN.EXE, for obvious reasons. wink

Some of the processes can only be killed by shutting down their service (Service Manager)

Another thing you can try is installing standard VGA drivers, or plugging in a different video card and see if it works then.
