I have a client using Maximizer Enterprise 5.0 (with btrieve on a Novell Server). One user keeps getting an Error code 54. Everyone else is able to get in and work fine. I have tried, per document REF 000720-0012 (from the Maximizer web site) to rename the User file (MXZU) but when I did so it seemed to screw up the licensing. Thus, I renamed it back.

Is there any way to fix file corruption short of doing the backup and restore option described in this document?
Thanks

I didn't see that one, but I did note that Ref. #000731-0000 suggests that flaky network cards/drivers can cause that error as well. In any case,

Maximizer backup/restore is always your first line of defense with corrupted files.
Only solutions to an errorcode 54 are to Backup and restore OR restore from a previous backup. Worth bearing in mind to ALWAYS do a manual backup of the datafiles before doing this because the restore will destroy the original database!
Its also often worth making a seperate copy of both the userfile(mxzu.max) and the Column file(mxzm.max) because these are the 2 most commonly corrupted files and they contain no client data (They contain user settings, column layouts, macros etc which don't change very often) these can then be very quickly replaced if they become corrupt again. If the problem is happening very often it maybe worth looking at going fully Client/server as this will all but eliminate these errors.

Since only one user is getting this Error code 54 it doesn't seem as if it is file or database corruption. My Suggestions are is that it is a flaky network Card or possibly a corruption in his User ID. Here are the things I would try

1) Change Network Cards with a machine that is working
2) Delete the User in Maximizer and add him back in
3) Is this user accessing the Database via a UNC Path \\ComputerName\ShareName or via a mapped drive P:\MaxData ?
If UNC Change to Mapped if Mapped change to UNC.

Hope that helps
Sorry but I beg to differ, The errorcode 54 is 100% definately a corruption of data in the userfile. The file that is corrupted is the MXZU.max and because of this only the user information stored in the corrupted section of the file causes problems (Hence all the other login names work fine). You must either Backup and Restore the userfile, Restore the user file from a previous backup or Delete the userfile and then recreate the usernames.
