What is the best way to rebuild a database?

When verify my database, it says that it has orphaned records- what does this mean.

In a relational database, "orphaned" records are records that should be related to some other item in the database but that other item is missing. In Maximizer one example would be a Contact record for whom the related Company or Individual record no longer exists.

The best way to fix this is to run Address Book Verification from the Administrator module, selecting the "Verify and Recover" option. If problems persist and you are running a Pervasive.SQL version, try doing a complete backup/restore of the database (not a "Quick Backup").
