Email Alternative to Outlook with Maximizer?

I'd love to replace MS Outlook with a more user-friendly, flexible email client like Thunderbird. I know that I'd be sacrificing the ability to synchronize email and my outgoing emails to contacts would no longer show in my contacts' records.

Do you know of people that have used Thunderbird or an email client with Maximizer besides Outlook?
What have their experiences been and was it in retrospect, a good move for them or a bad move?
