Hi,
I've been using Maximizer for about 11 years. Current setup: single user, Max 9, Windows 2000, on a laptop. I've accummulted a growing list of usernames, passwords, and other confidential info about client's systems, etc. I decided I should password protect my Maximizer address book should/when the laptop goes missing with this sensitive info.

Question, how do I setup a password on an existing address book that currently doesn't have a password?

I've tried File > Users and highlighted the MASTER useID then clicked on password. But it seems I need the "old password" which I've never had. I've tried "maximizer", "MAXIMIZER", and "control" which the manual suggests is the default one. The message I get back is the "incorrect password". I've also tried leaving "old password" blank. But nothing will let me add a new password. I've also gone to the Administrator and checked "Security" but that just locked me out of the address book all together by requiring a password (which I never had a chance to enter). Luckily I had backed up the actual data files (not just a backup)as I could not do a RESTORE because Administrator required a password to restore the locked out address book!! Whew.

I've also tried creating a new user. I can successfully set up a password for that new person, but when I go to open the address book, it opens without asking for a password. I suspect it's opening it with the user being "Master" and not the new user.

The Max9 manual only has a couple of pages on passwords but nothing that helps. So I'm stymied.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks,

-Tony, Vancouver BC.

Hi, Tony - to enable security, go into Max Admin as MASTER and use File > Preferences > Enable Security. That will allow you to set up users, each with their own password. If you have multiple Address Books you need to do this within each Address Book individually.

Please let me know the results as I'd like to do the same thing with my personal data. I'm using Max 7, but when I tried to do this before none of my data was visible when I logged in under a user name. It was as if all my entries had been flagged as Private so the new user ID couldn't see them. Don't know how to fix this if it does happen - I put this project on the back burner.

Hi Rob,
THanks for the tip, I'll give it a try and experiement more. I'll first make several copies of my existing MAX 7 files. I noticed when I did turn on security, it immediately locked me out from my address book. And restoring from a backup did not work because RESTORE wanted a password which I never had a chance to enter.

I'll report back here (it'll be a few days).

regards,
-Tony
I finally had some time to try setting a password on my address book (plus now I'm storing more and more sensitive info in there).

But no luck. Here's my modus operandi:
- backup the whole Maximizer data folder to 2 different places (once I mess up the address book, there is no going back).

- open Administrator. Add new user, assign a password.

- In administrator, click File > Preferences and enable security.

- Exit Administrator, go back to Maximizer. Open address book. But user is MASTER and the user is greyed out, can't change it to my user name I just created. For the MASTER's password, I tried MAXIMIZER and control as documented, but no go.

- Go back to Administrator, but catch 22, can't open the address book because I don't have the password for MASTER. I don't think I ever changed it because I didn't need a password.

- I tried creating a brand new address book as a test. Same problem, opening the address book comes up with MASTER as the user and no way to change it. Maybe something in the ADministrator. But no obvious.

I'll have to leave it again, but I'd really like to password protect my info. Way too risky now.

I'm using Max 9 now.

With the Administrator password you can enable security and set up users. However, when I tried that in a test Address Book (a copy of my live Address Book) none of my data was visible. As per my June 26 post it was like all my entries had been flagged as Private so I couldn't see them.

I went back to my live data (which I hadn't changed) and shelved the project.

The need is still there,.however - if you figure this one out, Tony, please share!

TIA - R.
Hi Rooster,
I've no luck with this one. I get into this circular situation where I enable security, but once I do that, I can't open my address book because I haven't had a chance to set the password and "control" doesn't work. I've shelved the project again, but am getting concerned as I use maximizer as my repository for information and there is sensitive info. I'll try again when I have time and a chance to really digest the suggestions and my own preconceptions of the procedure.

PS. A note to anyone trying to turn on security: backup your Maximizer files first because once you get caught in the loop I get into, you no longer have access to your address book. You're locked out with no opportunity to recover your data.

Hi, It's been a year going without a password. I decided to try again. But no luck. In this iteration I added a new user in the Administrator and gave him (me) a password. But no where in Maximizer (main or Administrator) can I get Maximizer to require a password to open the address book. I see there is File > Login, but Log In is greyed out.

So in summary, I have a new user setup with a password but no way to enforce using the password with my existing Address book.

Any suggestions? Anyone else made any progress on this. I'm now using Maximizer 9 (series 1707, SP2 for SR1).

thanks, -Tony
Have made some progress. Work Flow:
In Administrator
-opened address book
-added new user and set password for the user
-In Preferences, enabled SECURITY option

Now the address book requires a login ID and password to open. This is exactly what I wanted.

But now, I no longer have access in Administrator to the address book because to open the address book in Administrator, it asks for the Master's password which I don't know. I've tried "control" and "MAXIMIZER" but those don't work. If I've changed the Master password before, then I don't have a record of what it is/was.

So two questions:
- I've used Maximizer since about 1994, were there other standard passwords used in the past other than control and MAXIMIZER?

- Anyone had experience with calling Maximizer (and paying the support fee) to reset their master password?

-Tony
Tony,

If you don't have any users configured you can reset the password to its default by locating the Maximizer files on your machine (click File>>Open Address book, highlight the database and click explore) and rename the MXZU.MAX to MXZU.old (you will have to make sure no maximizer applications are running).

Then restart Maximizer, it will recreate the MXZU.MAX file in its default state, you may need to go through the steps to reactivate the security on the database. Then the MASTER password should be control.
