Response time is very slow over current configuration - 52 seconds to get a login prompt, 142 seconds from selecting an Address Book to viewing it, 6 seconds to open a Contact, 6 seconds to switch from Contact Details tab to UDF tab, etc.

This is an improvement from before (I now have my server's IP address explicitly defined in my "hosts" file, and have switched the target to Pervasive engine to "Workstation only"). However, still not fast enough by far. I am expecting more speed improvements tomorrow with cable speed improvement from Internet "Lite" access to full "high speed" internet access, but still expect to want more.

Any suggestions or stats on what real bandwidth I need for adequate performance in a fast-paced environment full of impatient users - one of whom I'm married to?

Am running Max 7 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server with 512MB RAM (on server) and XP Pro on remote workstation with 256MB RAM. Each machine is plugged into its own VPN Router, which is are each plugged into separate cable modems, with the two cable modems plugged into the Internet. Physically the server & stations are about 2000 miles apart.

Current network benchmarks & stats :
- Ping server from workstation = 140ms average; Occastional spikes to 170ms and occasional lost packet (1 out of 15 maybe?)
- Current Internet "Lite" current connection = 128kbps download, 64kbps upload
- Tomorrow's full hight speed connection - 1.5Mbps download, 192kbps upload

Thanx for your help - R.

Try disabling Tabbed Windows. Choose...

Window > Window Layout > Custom

...then close all windows and just open the Address Book window with [Ctrl-1]. See if that speeds things up.

If so, pick a layout with just the windows you need most often (e.g. Address Book, Contacts and UDFs). Arrange them how you like, then hit [Alt-Shift-F4] to save the layout. Look at...

Window > Save Settings on Exit

...and make sure that it does not have a check mark next to it. If it does, click on it to remove it. That way, Maximizer will always start up with your minimal custom layout.
Another thought:

If you have Maximizer set to automatically show all Address Book entries on startup, don't. Choose...

File > Preferences > System Defaults

...and check "Ask at program startup which Address Book list to view".

When you launch Maximizer the next time, choose "View empty list" and check "Make this my default...". That will start Maximizer with an empty list, then allow you to Search for the entries you'll be working with at the moment.

Also, a comment:

Some quick testing with my DSL connection (1Mbps/128Kbps) indicates that your new Internet connection will be better than your old one, but still slow enough to affect productivity (and possibly sanity). If so, you might consider

- a remote-access solution (VNC, pcAnywhere, or Terminal Services), or possibly

- upgrading to Maximizer Enterprise and using MaxExchange.

None of those options is cheap, but Maximizer itself was not really designed to operate over a WAN. Yes, it is a "client/server" application, but it still generates a lot of network traffic (as you have already discovered).
