Importing ACT data - Fatal Error detected while processing ACT file. Code returned = -2002

When I try to import data from ACT I get a message : Fatal Error detected while processing ACT file. Code returned = -2002
I have already gone through the procedure of creating a new, clean, uncompressed database and re-indexing.
Can anyone advise? I can easily get everything except the notes in by importing as a Dbase iV format, or exporting to excel and importing, but I really want the notes.
I would love a quick-fix solution that I could implement myself. Alternatively, If anyone offers a service to convert and ACT to a MAX database let me know what you need from me in order to give me a price quote.

Check out the posting farther down for how to import Act! I had been getting that error too.
