The trick to this very long answer is to work your way through trying one task at a time until the problem is resolved, starting with the most obvious to the least obvious.
Have you tried the various Maximizer and Microsoft Service Packs, such as DCOM or MDAC 2.6 for Windows and Maximizer 6 ServicePack2.
Do you use the OrderDesk or MaxAlarm and MaxFinder? If not turn off the MaxAlarm and MaxFinder programs and delete them from your Windows startup folder (Start Menu>Programs>Startup) so they don't reappear next time you reboot windows (more on the startup folder later)
To disable the Orderdesk, goto Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Program Files\Maximizer\Plug-ins\BPWindow and rename the folder BPWindow to something like BPWindowX, so that Maximizer doesn't recognise it.
There are a few more things you could check whilst trying to resolve this problem, and the first one would be, can you check that you have the Pervasive path in your Autoexec.bat file.
You can do this by going to Ms-Dos or Dos/Command Prompt (depending on O/s, but I think you said you are on Win98 so that will be Ms-Dos)
Next type 'PATH' and it should say somewhere within the very long string of text that appears 'C:\Pvsw\Bin'
If not then you will need to goto Start>Run and type 'Sysedit' (if you indeed are on Win98) and add to your Autoexec.bat
'Set path=C:\Pvsw\Bin'
Next you could try a Pervasive engine autoload from the Windows startup
Try going to Windows Explorer, Drag and Drop the file C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE into your Windows start up folder, via either your Start Menu or if you know its exact location in Windows Explorer, do it that way.
When it is in your start up folder, Right click it then select properties>Shortcut and where it says Target it should say;
C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE -BTRV
(You add the -BTRV)
I hope this helps in some way, Maxwin.exe errors seem to be quite common and from my experiance one of these tasks will resolve it.
