I've been trying to attach documents to Address Book entries and it only works when you Link the document. When you Embed it, I get an Madata6 error (performed an illegal operation, etc.). This is for a single user install of Max 7 - although we're going multi-user very soon.

I checked the Maximizer knowledge base and for a similar error (Madata6 error when trying to connect to or create a new Address Book) it says to put the Pervasive engine in the Startup folder by using Start - Settings - Task Bar - Start - Advanced tab and adding c:\pvsw\bin\w3dbsmgr.exe ... and their instructions don't map to the steps I have. Also, I can't locate a w3dbsmgr.exe file that way, just a bunch of shortcuts so that didn't look right. Apparently that is supposed to correct a problem where the default workstation installation doesn't load the Pervasive engine.

I checked my autoexec.bat and I already have an entry for c:\pvsw\bin\w3dbsmgr.exe -SRDE

I tried removing the -SRDE flag and rebooting, but Word and other progrms started acting really funny - not loading, etc. I also still had the same error in Max.

The entry in the Max knowledge base was also referring to a multi-user install with a separate server so maybe it was the wrong solution to start.

Anyway, I need to be able to embed the documents in the database - linking won't work to truly share the info if somebody accidentally leaves the file on their local drive.

If someone can help, it would be REALLY appreciated! I'm happy to help anyone else in turn with other issues I'm aware of, of course.

TIA - R

the MaData6 error that occurs is a cloudy one, it can happen at the most unexpected moments, it is general the communication between the database engine (Pervasive) and MaData6 (Maximizer) getting interrupted by something going on in the background of the operating system.

You could try;

Rename BPWindow folder (in C:\Program files\Maximizer) to BPwindowX (if you are not using Orderdesk) or if Maximizer kind of runs ok, then you can disable it in File>Preferences and then restart Maximizer.

Clean out Temp folder on each workstation (C:\Windows\Temp or C:\Windows\System32\Temp).

Shut down Virus Checker while using Maximizer (if not possible, then maybe just script blocking?)

Use the minimum amount of programs whilst using Maximizer, because resource issues have been known to also cause General Page Fault errors (MaData6 and Maxwin.exe errors).

Or as with older versions of Maximizer that had Maxwin.exe errors you could try some service packs from Microsoft, such as MDAC2.6 or DCOM98 (if you are running Win98)

If you were a little baffled by the instructions for a Pervasive startup

Try going to Windows Explorer, Copy and Paste as a Shortcut the file C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE into your Windows start up folder;

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 9X or

C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\StartMenu\Programs\Startup for WinNT

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 2000 or XP

When it is in your start up folder, Right click it then select properties>Shortcut and where it says Target it should say;

C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE -SRDE

(You add the -SRDE)

You say however that you can't find it, do you have a folder called PVSW on the root of your C:\ drive or do you have other drives? such as D:\ or E:\

You could try a Maximizer Backup and Restore

A Backup and restore sort of re-indexes the data. An optimised backup and restore works or you could create a blank new Maximizer 7 address book and to use the file>transfer>addressbook entries from your current address book to a newly created blank one (do File>New Address Book prior to doing a transfer, so you have a new available empty address book), this one will be ok as long as there are no opportunities in your data.

Or alternatively you could make a full physical copy of your data. Load Maximizer, go to File>Open Address Book>Highlight your database and note the folder location. Then close Maximizer, load Windows Explorer and browse to where it said your database was and right click on the folder and select 'copy' then browse to some where safe (My Documents perhaps?) and do Edit>Paste (this will paste a copy of your data somewhere else incase this doesn't work)

Next load the Administrator program in Start>Programs>Maximizer Enterprise folder, if it try's to open the address book go to File>Close Address Book, when not in an address book go to Utilities>Backup address book folder and select your address book. Click Ok to all questions, but when it asks which File you want to backup, select 'All'.

When asked where you want to back up to, you can click on 'Browse' and backup to the same location as the folder location in Open Address Book, this will be ok because you made a full physical copy first right?.

Once this is complete, you can go to Utilities>Restore Address Book folder, it is probably best to select an 'optimised Restore' choose the same location again and then select 'all' files again, and then restore to your address book. Regardless of the warnings about destroying data, you have an identical copy in My Documents (I hope!).

This should re-index your data, which will enable it to run more efficiently.

its also a good Idea to install the latest drivers for the system devices, network drivers, e.t.c. As the faster the access to the data the less chance of getting a MaData6.dat error.

Now that was thorough!

I worked it through with Max Support and finally had to disable Script Blocking in Norton Anti-Virus (after checking just about everything else you described, of course!). Don't like the current fix, but I have to say the Max Support guys were good to work with - and followed up promptly as well! Unfortunately this hasn't been the case in the past, so I'm glad to see it improving.

There may be another, better answer as well - I sent an email to Max Support afterwards asking about authorizing the Max activity in NAV. Apparently normal operation pops up an alert where you can "Authorize" the script in question so NAV stays out of the way in future. For some reason I wasn't getting the alert, but thought perhaps the development team could work with NAV development to pre-seed the authorization, and ideally release a fix for those of us already up. Assuming, of course, this is even an appropriate answer, as I'm not a techie.

Thanx again for your help - we're really starting to push Max hard in our recruiting business, so this sort of interaction is very important to us.
