My company recently announced that it is finally migrating to Windows 7. With that I realize that my LONG used Maximizer 7 would no longer work, and that I'd have to upgrade to Maximizer 12, if I want to keep access to my 11 years of notes.

Last night I donloaded the 15 day Entrepreneur Trial. Using my Windows XP computer (which already had Maximizer 7 with Pervasive database engine installed, I uninstalled Maximizer 7 and then installed Maximizer 12...very smooth process.

Next in Administrator setting, I upgraded one of my "old" Maximizer 7 databases and it worked perfectly. Then within Administrator, I completed a BACKUP of that upgraded database.

The problems then started when I tired to install Maxmizer 12 Entrepreneur on my Windows 7 computer. It would get about 20% through the install process, but wouldn't complete due to a SQL Server error. After searching forums and spending a couple of hourse trying to figure this out, I did a manual install of SQL server express 2008 (which came with the Maximizer 12 trial download). As soon as that was completed the MAximizer install completed correctly.

Good news...or so I thought...here's where I NEED HELP!

In Maximizer 12, I went into Administrator setting and created a new database named "WorkContacts" (which is the same name of what I backed up on the Windows XP system). I then closed that database out and within Administrator selected the RESTORE function under Utilities. I browsed my hard drive and located the "WorkContacts.BAK" file that I created from my Windows XP Computer that had been upgraded to Maximizer 12.

As soon as I hit "OK" to restore it, a dialog box pops up QUICKLY saying "Restore in progress. Please wait...", then disappears in a FLASH. Then a dialog box pops up over top of that sayiing "The database WorkContacts has been restored from C:\...."

I was nervous the 1st time this happened so quickly as it didn't seem there was enough time for the data fields to be input, and sure enough when I went back in to open the recently "restored" database NOTHING was there.

I've tried the process about 5 more times with the same results and have looked all over this forum and Google trying to find out if there are different instructions for Backup/Restore when trying to restore the database to a different computer.

I have to know that this works, not only for this "upgrade", but also for the fact, that if I ever need to change computers in the future, that I can keep my data intact when moving along to my next computer.

See the attached Word document with screen captures of what I'm seeing.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated...especially if I can get a resolution before my 15 day trial expires.

I think there are probably two likely causes for this issue. The first of which is that you may be trying to use a disc for which SQL does not fully have the permissions it requires. This can happen if you are using compression or are using some form of external drive as the source of your back-up file. Make sure you are working on the local c:\ drive.

Alternatively, and I think more likely in this case, your Maximizer has not actually installed correctly. Did you install the Escona tutorial database? This is always a good idea as it allows you to evaluate that your Maximizer is working correctly. If the installation is broken in this way it may not be possible to give you instructions on a bulletin board. You will need to use the SQL studio and probably the best approach would be to uninstall Maximizer and SQL and re-install again until you have Escona working. We can provide a remote service to do this via an incident on www.CRMShop.co.uk
I appreciate your response but have run the .bak from the C: drive each time. So, option 1 is out. As for the 2nd idea, I've now tried this on 3 different computers where I've installed the Maximizer 12 Entrepreneur application.

Keep in mind in each instance I've not been able to install Maximizer 12 'normally' in any instance. I have to install MSFT SQL Server 2008 R2 manually first, change server id to 'Maximizer', then set authentication to 'mixed mode'. Once that gets installed, I'm then able to install Maximizer 12.

The General and Escona Tutorial's work fine as I navigate them well in each install.

I'm able to backup and restore the database just fine in the Windows XP computer that I've upgraded form Max 7 to Max 12, but I can't for the life of me get that same backup to properly restore to any of the 3 Windows 7 computers that I've tried.

Is there some type of lock mechanism in the server file that won't allow the database to transfer to another computer or OS?
Forgot to mention in last post. I know in Max 7 if you tried to move the database folder from one computer to another computer a hidden file PVSW.loc would be created and it would keep you from being able to move the DB to another computer. So, I'm wondering if something similar exists here, even though on page 115 of the Administrator Guide it makes it seem very easy to move the DB to another computer via backup/restore.

Thanks for any insight.
OK finally got it! Not sure if you can deviate from this at all to actually get this to work, but here's what I did to successfully restore to another computer:
1) From administrator in the existing database under utilities select "backup database".
2) Once you've selected the database that you want to backup, DO NOT select a 'path' to back it up to (previously I was selecting to backup to an external hard drive). Instead, leave the path blank and select OK.
3) By default in Win 7 is will back the file up to the main database folder, which is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MAXIMIZER\MSSQL\DATA"
4) Once backup is complete go into that folder and copy the *.bak file to an external drive.
5) Move the external drive over to the new computer and once Maximizer 12 is installed go back into Administrator
6) Create a 'new' database with the exact same name as was on the old computer.
7) Once complete go to the path listed above and paste the *.bak database file from the old computer into that same SQL folder.
8) Go back to Administrator and under utilities select Restore Database.
9) Select the 'new' database that matches the name of the DB on the old computer, then find the *.bak file in the SQL Data folder and hit OK.
10) You should then be off to the races.

I've now done this with 2 of the 3 databases I maintain and can feel comfortable knowing my company is migrating to Windows 7, and know that I can move my Maximizer DB's freely in case my hard drive crashes or I need to get a new computer. I'll certainly be making weekly backups of my DBs (if not more often)!
