Please help! I recently upgraded from Maximizer Enterprise 4 to 2000 & MaxExchange 5.5 on a Win98 system. ReportSmith won't work, as I can't set up the ODBC files. The Maximizer file isn't listed & I can't seem to add it. How do I work around or get this fixed (BTW, I also installed the SR1 patch & the 5.5 ODBC download from Maximizer. There are 2 mxz driver & driver setup files, but no "inf" files which ODBC is looking for.)I have also uninstalled & reinstaled Maximizer...

|Problem Description
|In the odbc Data Sources applet, you attempt to create a new system
|data source name using the following steps:
|
|1. In the ODBC Data Sources applet, select the System DSN tab.
|
|2. Click Add.
|
|3. Select the Maximizer ODBC Driver and click Finish.
|
|The program returns to the System DSN tab without creating a DSN and
|without allowing the user to select a Maximizer address book folder to
|reference.
|
|Solution
|If you encounter this issue, verify that MXZDIR.DAT exists in the
|Maximizer program directory. Load Maximizer and choose File Open
|Address Book Folder, then click Cancel. Attempt to create a System DSN
|again. If you receive the results mentioned above, follow the steps
|below:
|
|1. Choose Start Run.
|
|2. Type REGEDIT and click OK.
|
|3. Navigate down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maximizer
|Technologies\Maximizer\Directory.
|
|4. Double-click Dbases and modify the existing value such that it has
|a \ to the right of value (e.g. C:\Program Files\Maximizer becomes
|C:\Program Files\Maximizer\).
|
|5. Close the Registry Editor.
|
|6. In Maximizer, choose File Open Address Book Folder.
|
|7. Click Cancel.
|
|8. Exit Maximizer.
|
|Create a new System DSN using the odbc Data Sources applet again. The
|procedure will work without incident.

A couple of other items from a posting I made last November:

|Things to check:
|
|- mxzdir.dat must exist. Launch Maximizer, do File > Open and make
|sure that you can see the Address Book to which you want to link.
|
|- verify that Mxzbtr32.dll and Mxzstp32.dll exist in
|c:\windows\system
|
|- check the PATH to ensure that c:\pvsw\bin is included
|
|If it still doesn't work, try reinstalling Maximizer (or perhaps
|just the MDAC component).

(Yes, I know you already tried reinstalling Maximizer....) wink

smile*Yes to both the above.

smileYes to both. Date is 1/10/2000 for both. There is also a Mxmail97.dll dated 9/10/99. Not sure if that's significant.

frownNo such directory exists on any drive. When I upgraded my Win98 peer to peer, I stayed with btrieve (at the suggestion of one of the techs at Multiactive).

I didn't see any MDAC component option on the install disk. I downloaded & installed Microsoft's new MDAC 2.6 & version tester. I did reinstall ReportSmith, though, when I did the uninstall, & custom re-install, followed by the SR1 patch. I finally went back to a Enterprise ver 5.0 disk where I found an ODBC folder w/ install files in it. I ran it & then ran the new maximizer 5.5 odbc update.

& I'll probably be doing it again.... sigh. Unfortunately, I forgot which file saves my window font & color settings, so I had to recreate my preferences all over again!

What else can I try? Why won't the driver even appear in the ODBC list??

Well, you could try stuffing the Maximizer Driver entry into the ODBC drivers list. Put the following into a file called "max_odbc.reg" and then double-click it. Then see if you can get ODBC to go.

WARNING! The following thingamajig will make changes to your Registry. Use at your own risk. Back up your registry first. And all that....

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\ODBC Drivers]
"Maximizer ODBC Driver"="Installed"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\Maximizer ODBC Driver]
"UsageCount"=dword:00000000
"Driver"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\mxzbtr32.dll"
"Setup"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\mxzstp32.dll"
"Separator"=","
"TrueDate"="False"
"Visible"="True"

p.s. I had to make a slight change to the REG file I originally posted, so that's why...
