I have a rather odd problem with running Maximizer 9 on Terminal Services in Server 2003. When I log in as Administrator, it runs quite well. When I log in as an ordinary user, it's an absolute dog. Selecting an address list entry can take up to two or three seconds. This leads me to believe this must be permissions based.

I have set my users to full permissions on the Maximizer address book directories, with no change. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, with no change.

I'm assuming this has got to be a Pervasive issue, and my hunch is that Maximizer, unable to use Pervasive, is just reading the flat files directly, with all the associated performance hits.

I have tried this both with the Pervasive Engine as a Startup program, and as a service, with no difference.

For those who might be interested, I seem to have solved my problem.

A little background. We have two Maximizer installs, one for the main office and one for the remote offices. We are on one single domain, with a domain controller running Terminal Server at one of the remote locations.

To fix the problem, I set up the Terminal Server Group Policy to force all users, regardless of which servers provide home and profile shares, to use the Terminal Services profile and home directories located on the terminal server. Once that was done, speeds were right up.

What I suspect is happening is that Maximizer must be using either the profile or home paths (or possibly both) in some way for communicating with the Pervasive gateway engine. If those directories are located on the other side of the VPN tunnel, it's likely that it's either using the remote Pervasive engine or possibly not using it at all, in which case performance is absolutely horrific.

I suspect that Maximizer may, very stupidly, be using one or the other of these paths for temporary storage when transferring records (my bets are on Home, as even the profile directory is going to be loaded on to the Terminal Server). Perhaps it's some interaction between the two Maximizer installs, since those users whose profiles are stored on the Terminal Server don't have the speed issues.

At any rate, it is solved, and though my situation may be a bit out of the norm, I hope at some point someone finds some use. It's been one heckuva problem to solve.
