Is this machine NT4 Server or Workstation?
NT4 Server maybe having difficulties, NT4 Workstation will definatly have problems.

A workstation OS is not a very good idea for a database server if you have more than say 5+ clients trying to access it.

How much memory does the machine have?
What is the performance of the Processor?
How much space is there on the Disk Drive containing the data?

What else is it running?

Have you tried the Task Manager to see what other processes maybe swallowing processor and memory time?

Can you try a couple of tests on a client.

Go to Start>Run and type 'Command' or 'CMD' then OK

try typing;

PING [server_name] enter
next
PING -A [server_IP_address] enter
then
TRACERT [server_name] enter

substitute [server_name] and [server_IP_address] with the name or IP address of this server on the LAN

If you don't know these details, go to the server and type 'CMD' in Start>Run and then type in the DOS prompt

IPCONFIG /ALL and then Enter

you will see something similar to;

Windows IP Configuration

How I can test it. Is there any parameter In Pervasive or maximizer which will show the server name it is looking for?

You didnt include registry settings so i couldn't see what protocols Maximizer/Pervasive is using.

Did the TCP/IP test run quite smoothly (i.e. the count didn't stop and start or pause at all?) let it run beyond 75, a couple of thousand perhaps

If TCP/IP runs ok try going to the Pervasive Control Centre and changing both Server and Client Communications Protocols to TCP/IP only at both ends.

See how this goes.

When i asked about the each machine wondering if they had the correct details i was enquiring about Routing and Name Resolution

What else does this machine do?

Is this the only server or do you have others?

If it is the only one, how many clients do you have?

I assume it has 2Gb of Ram not 2Mb Wink

The (SO_Linger) error in the SmartScout can be ignored, and the rest doesn't to reveal much.

If the total load on the server is only 4% then i would suspect a Protocol issue, but if this is a Primary Domain Controller with lots of clients then 4% is quite low.

Does this reveals any clue if no then I will inform your other queries.
Other answers:

--->Did the TCP/IP test run quite smoothly (i.e. the count didn't stop and start or pause at all?) let it run beyond 75, a couple of thousand perhaps

Sent = 2556, received = 2512 , 44(1% loss)

Minimum = 0, Max=164ms, Average = 0

Please note that request time out occurs when I start Maximizer. And some times it pauses. The max time occurred during maximizer start.

---->If TCP/IP runs ok try going to the Pervasive Control Centre and changing both Server and Client Communications Protocols to TCP/IP only at both ends.

Both ends are already TCP/IP

See how this goes.

When i asked about the each machine wondering if they had the correct details i was enquiring about Routing and Name Resolution

What else does this machine do?

Is this the only server or do you have others?
We have two servers. Both are NT

If it is the only one, how many clients do you have?

40 clients

I assume it has 2Gb of Ram not 2Mb Wink

IT Is 2 GB

The (SO_Linger) error in the SmartScout can be ignored, and the rest doesn't to reveal much.

If the total load on the server is only 4% then i would suspect a Protocol issue, but if this is a Primary Domain Controller with lots of clients then 4% is quite low.

Right, haven't seen anything out of the ordinary yet.

Do any machines run any Virus software at all? (in particular Norton?)

Is this speed issue constant?
does it occur not just at peak office hours but 1 machine logged on in the evening when everyone else has gone home?

how about switching how the data is accessed by going to File>New address book and creating 3 different ways of browsing to the same data like so;

\\192.168.0.50\MxData\MainData (i'll be most intrigued by the result of this one!)
or
\\ALRUQEENT\MxData\MainData
or map a drive to MxData to access like so
Z:\MainData

Which, if any, of these methods shows any improvement?

How about stopping and restarting the Pervasive Transactional and Relational Services on the server?

Other than a Maximizer server what else does this machine do?

Is it a PDC? DNS/WINS or DHCP machine?
Does it run any backups jobs during the day? (tape backups?)

Is it the Internet Gateway machine?

How many Network Cards does it have?

If you look at the performance moniter in the Task Manager does it run flat line or does it run constantly spiked (flat line and this is not a load on the server CPU problem)

One thing i forgot to ask, what Operating System are the clients and what is their performance like?

What is the speed of the Network Cards, 10 or 100Mb?

What colour are they flashing, Red or Green?

What are your Hubs doing, are any of them flashing a red light instead of a green one?

Is the cabling (CAT5) twisted anywhere?
Network cabling is not like Electrical cables
If it becomes twisted then your LAN starts to suffer.

How long is the cabling between Client and Server?
(including Hub, because Hubs don't boost signals)

If the CPU usage on the server doesn't reveal much then most people would test the TCP/IP Overhead and Throughput using the NETSTAT command in a DOS Prompt, but i prefer to use a little utility from AnalogX called NetStat Live, it produces a similar 'chart' type presentation of TCP/IP Overhead on the fly rather than a DOS Text layout.

When told that a Word document opens quickly from a server but why dosn't my Maximizer database, put simply a Word Document is one file, have you seen how many files make up a Maximizer database?

However, slow performance is not an issue with a Maximizer database its self or indeed the software, it runs extremely well on the vast majority of setups, but in this case we are trying to find out at what point in the Chain between Client and Server the process is falling over.

--Server and client have the anivirus software. But that is Mcafee not Norton Anti Virus.

>>Is this speed issue constant?
-- Yes
>>does it occur not just at peak office hours but 1 machine logged on in the evening when everyone else has gone home?

--It changes little bit depending on the load but that is not significant

Z:\MainData

Which, if any, of these methods shows any improvement?

-- Not significant

How about stopping and restarting the Pervasive Transactional and Relational Services on the server?
--- Same

Other than a Maximizer server what else does this machine do?

-- Some cliupper and Microsoft access and Sybase based software.

Is it a PDC? DNS/WINS or DHCP machine?

-- PDC ; DNS/WINS

Does it run any backups jobs during the day? (tape backups?)

--- NO

Is it the Internet Gateway machine?

--- NO

How many Network Cards does it have?

-- One

If you look at the performance moniter in the Task Manager does it run flat line or does it run constantly spiked (flat line and this is not a load on the server CPU problem)
-- CPU usage history little spiked ; Some times sharp rises. Memoru usage history always constant

One thing i forgot to ask, what Operating System are the clients and what is their performance like?

- Windows 98 with at least pentium 2

What is the speed of the Network Cards, 10 or 100Mb?

-- 100 MB

What colour are they flashing, Red or Green?

-- Green

What are your Hubs doing, are any of them flashing a red light instead of a green one?

-- Always green but collission is there

Is the cabling (CAT5) twisted anywhere?
Network cabling is not like Electrical cables
If it becomes twisted then your LAN starts to suffer.

-- Not sure

How long is the cabling between Client and Server?
(including Hub, because Hubs don't boost signals)
-- 30/40 meter
