Multiple instances of MaxExchange server windows

MaxExchange server has 3 MaxExchange server windows open when left running over the weekend and this causes a loss of synchronizing for remote users using FTP. This happens every weekend. I have tried to run multiple windows manually but it won’t and shouldn’t according to the book.
What is causing and allowing multiple windows to occur?
