My windows7 professional machine crashed and I had to reinstall windows and Maximizer10 Entrepreneur.

All is working correctly now but I want to open my old address book. I have a backup of the microsoft SQL server directoy, this contains a folder MSSQL.1, with a subfolder MSSQL and a subfolder Data.

The data folder contains my address book
Banair.MDF and Banair.SQL

I copied these into the new Data folder but Maximizer does not see them. How do I get Maximizer to open this address book.

Nick, this is because those two files are the SQL database files. Maximizer doesn't know what to do with them as it is expect MS SQL to handle the database.

You need to create a new database in the SQL Express and map it to those files then connect it up to Maximizer, it is a reasonably complex process so if you do not feel confidant carrying it out yourself I would suggest you pop over to our webstore CRM Shop and purchase a Support Incident, we will then sort it out remotely for you.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't fancy learning about SQL express and yet I don't want to have to call you guys up every time I need to restore the database. (Computers do crash occasionally and databases get corrupted)

I tried a lateral approach and it worked perfectly.

Here are the details for anyone else in the same situation.

1. Make sure you are not using sql for anything other than maximizer. I knew I wasn't because maximizer installed it.

2.Get your backup copy of the directory "Microsoft SQL Server" and rename as "Microsoft SQL Server1". Place it in the same folder as the current "Microsoft SQL Server". In my system this is "program files(x86)

3. Close down the computer and restart in safe mode by pushing F8 as it starts. It is necessary to start in safe mode so the SQL files are not in use.

4. Rename "Microsoft SQL Server" as "Microsoft SQL Server New" and "Microsoft SQL Server1" as "Microsoft SQL Server".

5. Restart the system and everything is restored correctly.

I'm glad this worked for you, however this is not a solution we would recommend as you are replacing the installed files with a different set, this includes the system files and configuration so in many cases this will cause knock on problems.

As for restoring a database, Maximizer Entrepreneur edition has a backup/restore function for databases built into it. If you look in the Maximizer Administrator there are options for Backup and Restore under the Utilities menu (may be grey'd out if you have a database open, click File>>Close Address Book).

If you make sure you take regular backups of the data and store them in a different location then you can restore those backups in the case of a system crash.

When it comes to backing up, there is a way to automate a backup using SQL Scripts and a Batch file which you then schedule using the Windows Task Scheduler.

I'm afraid there is no simple way to automate the backup of a database as the backup is handled by SQL Express and one of the things Microsoft removed from the Express edition when they decided to provide it for free was the ability to schedule tasks in the SQL Agent.
