Opportunity status

Can anyone help me understand the opportunity status? How does Max determine that an opportunity is "in progress" rather than "new"? Does it change when initial changes are made to the opportunity? Can an opportunity be in progress for me but new for others?

If you are talking about this in terms of opportunities in user lists or on remotes an opportunity counts as 'new' if it is new or has been changed/updated by the owner or another user with update permissions since you last looked at it.
