I have two problems with Opportunities:

1. I'd rather apply a rating based on where the opportunity is in the sales track. In other words, if there are 10 steps, and the opportunity is at step 6, then the probability is 50%. I have no faith in the current weighting system.

2. When using sales steps, the Max table view does not show the current step. Accordingly, it is impossible to view a list of opportunities and note their location in the sales pipeline. This seems like a logical requirement for the person project managing the pipeline.

Any ideas?

Use a UDF make it a multi value table field when you complete a step fill in the Step 1 completed item. Make a report that reads that field and when you flag an item the reports shows probability of close at xx%

Although just because you are on step 5 of 6 this doesn't necessarily mean this opp is going to close successfuly. perhaps the roles involved hate the opp and all your success factors are against you. In this case being on step 5 of 6 wouldn't mean your prob of close is high.

I agree that strategies are difficult to use but you can also select not using a strategy and record all your steps in UDF's or then modify the prob of close manually based on the reps gut feeling about this particular opp.
