Our 2-person company is considering purching a 2-seat workgroup license for Maximizer 7. I tried to call sales with a configuration question, but I'm not convinced that they understood what I was asking, and I also didn't like what I heard Smile

From a "workgroup installation guide", it indicates that I should install the Pervasive Engine and the Maximizer database on the same machine (requirement?) Also, it is recommended to set up the Pervasive gateway on one machine (that is either on all of the time, or will be "on first" and "off last"). I have a stand alone machine that we can configure as our gateway, but do we need an additional Maximizer seat license for that machine?

Or can we simply install the Persuasive Engine on the standalone machine, create the database on a shared directory on the standalone machine (from a remote machine)?

After being put on hold for several minutes, sales told me I needed to buy 3 seats, but I think it should work with a 2 seat license. It was obvious she didn't know the answer and asked someone else. I'm not convinced that she relayed the question properly.

How have others configured the workgroup setup? Since the 30 day eval doesn't allow workgroup setup, I cannot test it. I can set up the pervasive gateway on machine 3, however I don't know how Maximizer will act.

Any help would be appreciated.

The machine with the data on it (in a 2 machine workgroup) will need to be the Gateway machine.

It will also need to be the machine that you apply the licences to.

And finally it will need to have a Pervasive Auto-Load shortcut created and placed in your Windows Startup folder so that the Pervasive engine runs as soon as this machine logs onto Windows.

The Pervasive engine is typically installed automatically during the Maximizer install. Both machines will have a Pervasive engine that runs when Maximizer is started, but it is the Gateway machine that will need it running all of the time for other machines to access its data.

To make this machine a Gateway;

Choose Start > Programs > Pervasive > Pervasive.SQL > Utilities > Gateway Locator.

In the Target Directory section, click the navigation button to the right of the Target Directory field (the one with three dots) and browse to the directory that contains the database. Click Open.

Click Change.

Select Assign a Gateway and click the navigation button (the one with three dots).

Highlight the gateway computer and click OK.

Click OK.

Click Refresh.

The Gateway assigned to field now displays the name of the gateway computer.

Click Exit.

Also you will need to do this in all databases you intend to share across your LAN.

How to configure a Pervasive Auto-Load

go to Windows Explorer, Copy and Paste as a 'Shortcut' the file C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE into your Windows start up folder;

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 9X or

C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\StartMenu\Programs\Startup for WinNT

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows 2000 or XP

When it is in your start up folder, Right click it then select properties>Shortcut and where it says Target it should say;
C:\Pvsw\Bin\W3DBSMGR.EXE -SRDE
(You add the -SRDE)
Click Apply and OK
and then reboot your machine, upon rebooting you should have an extra icon by the clock in the bottom right corner as soon as you logon to windows called a Pervasive Pre-Load.

As long as general networking pre-requisites such as TCP/IP and name resolution are functioning (more on this later if the 2nd Maximizer machine doesn't work) then it should be fine for a second machine to open the data on the first.

And Finally, it is probably best if during the Maximizer installs you choose a 'Custom' install and choose NOT to install Max Alarm and Max Finder, because as these run intermittently they will use one of your licences during thier cycle.

Thanks for the prompt response. Setting up the gateway machine makes sense, no problem. For the pervasive auto-load on the non-gateway machine, should it point to the local install of W3DBSMGR.EXE on that machines c:\ drive, or should it point to the W3DBSMGR.EXE file on the shared gateway machine?

Also, your config example assumes only the 2 peer-to-peer machines installed w/ Max 7 and Pervasive engine, right? If so, then will I have problems if the "gateway" computer isn't on? (i.e. that particular user hasn't turned the computer on yet, or leaves early in the afternoon and shuts their computer down, or simply needs to reboot because of a windows crash?)

For that reason, we are wanting to use a 3rd machine that is not really ever "used" for Max, but is on 24 hrs a day to act as the gateway. The 2 users would be on two separate computers sharing from the 3rd machine gateway.

You mention the gateway machine needs to apply the licenses. So that means I DO neat a 3-seat license if we use a 3rd machine to act only as a gateway? This is the only machine that is up almost 24 hours a day, however noone would actually use it for Maximizer.

I hope this makes sense. Thanks again.
You can have the Gateway assignment on a 3rd machine, ideally though this machine will also have Maximizer and the data on it.

As long as the engine is running and Maximizer isn't (and you don't install MaxAlarm and Finder) it should be fine.

If the Gateway goes down then access to the data is lost until it comes backup again.
