Howdy,

I'm new to Maximizer and have been having fits ever since we began using it. We recently bought a medical services company that included a customer database in Maximizer 6. Of course, soon after we took over, the hard drive in old computer crashed (with Max 6 on it, running Windows 98). Major ordeal to retrieve the Address Book files, but successful!

I installed the program on a newer machine running Windows 2000, installed the Max 6 Service Pack 2, restored the Address Book and everything worked, for about three days. Now the program crashes every time we try to open it and we can't get any work done!

We get two different messages; "The record is currently in use. Waiting for access to record". When we select the only option, "Stop waiting", it gives the second message "Maxwin.exe has generated an error and will be closed by Windows. An error log is being generated". Then the program closes, I can't find an error log, and continue to pull my hair.

I do not have any anti virus program loaded yet, but plan on it. The machine is one of two on a wireless LAN, connected to the Internet by a wireless router.

What I've done; Re-boot the PC, numerous times, no help. Exit the Pervasive SQL engine, MaxFinder and MaxAlarm and restart program/re-boot PC, no help. Re-install the program over the old one as a single machine application, no help. Un-install, re-install as single machine, no help. Un-install, re-install as peer to peer using Pervasive SQL engine 2000, no help. Smashed computer, monitor, keyboard, desk window and chair with baseball bat. No, wait. Haven't gotten to that point. Yet.

What the problem may be, though I really don't know.

1) I'm using Acronis True Image for backup to a separate, internal hard drive. Would that cause a "sharing" violation, i.e. "record is already in use"? If so, how can I fix it?

2) Max 6 is old and is unstable on Windows 2000. I've thought about upgrading to Max 8, but don't want to spend the $ on it until I'm sure I won't have the same problems with it, too.

3) Maximizer is trying to communicate with the other computer on the network even though I don't need/want it to.

4) I need to set up Outlook (which I haven't done yet) instead of Outlook Express as the email program. (Though I think that's grasping at straws).

Whew! Sorry for the tirade, but I needed to blow off some steam as well as ask for help.

Anything will be appreciated. Thanks

If it's any help, I've had that issue with Max 7 before. We're using uit under Terminal Services so sometimes the solution was to kill a user session that had somehow become disconnected from the logout process. Maybe for this use Max Admin to show you what users are in the Address Book? Especially if it's running only on one machine there should only be one ID. Sometimes the solution has been to simply reboot our data server and/or the workstations. Once or twice we've had to shut down Pervasive and restart it. Hasn't happened to us often, but the above solutions are what has worked for us. I agree that changing the email client isn't likely to affect this problem. Maybe try reinstaling without MaxFinder and MaxAlarm to see if that fixes the problem? I also did a search in the maximizer support knowledge base and came up with the following :

http:// support.maximizer.com/scripts/support.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_refno=010104-000067

Hope this help - R.

Even with two users - a wireless LAN is unlikely to give you the throughput that Maximizer would need. It might if it was only very casual use by one user and the network was configured properly but I suspect that when you re-installed/switched computers 1) the network as far as Maximizer is concerned wasn't set-up optimally and 2) the wireless LAN just doesn't cut it. Unfortunately, configuring your network properly isn't a topic for this forum. Search Maximizer KB for many useful articles.

Rooster, thanks for the tip. It looks like getting rid of Finder and Alarm worked. I also set my firewall on the other computer to deny Maximizer access to the network. I'll probably end up un-installing it from that machine all together.

Before I did all the above, I looked for Max Admin, but I'm new enough at this that I couldn't find it. Where 'bouts does it reside, and if I can't open the program to begin with, will I still be able to use Admin?

One last question. What's your opinion on upgrading? For a single user who uses it exclusivley for the Address Book, Hotlist and Notes, is it worth buying Max v8? I would do so only to avoid the frustration of the last week re stability. After reading some of the feedback in the v8 survey, I'm not inclined. Any thoughts.
Can't comment on Max 8 as we've put off the upgrade for now. I can say that Max 7 is stable, and might suggest you somehow get a copy of that and use it as an interim step. Not sure how much it will gain you in termsof functionality, but it's a thought and will at least get you closer to the latest & greatest. Purely from a personal habit perspective I'd try and get as close to the latest as you can. Perhaps Maximizer will let you have a trial copy or give you a copy of 7 when you pay for the upgrade to 8?

One additional tip - once you find Max Admin as per Methuen, enable the user security even if you only have one user. Without it you have no password protection, and adding password protection later is a bit tricky if you're using anything like Palm integration, etc. It's also nice to be able to track who created and last updated records.

Thanks for the tips. I'll mull over the v7 advice. I tend to believe in the latest and greatest as well. BUT, with the trouble I've had to date, it's finally running smoothly (knock on wood), so I'm loath to dink around too much.

Also, Methuen, I cannot find MaxAdmin in Start|All Programs|Maximizer. There are a number of thigs listed (release notes, on-line documantation, tutorial etc...), but not Admin. Hmmm?
Hmmm ... Maybe Admininstrator doesn't install that way under v6? Maybe somehow it wasn't installed? Weird but ...

Also, do you ever access the Backup/Restore utilities? If so, how do you access them? They are part of Administrator.

I'd go into the Install CD and see if I could install Max Admininstrator as part of the process (maybe not install it just yet but see if comes up as an option that could ahve been skipped).

Also, other Max 6 users reading this - how do you access Administrator???
