This is more of a comment than it is a question, but I just had to say my piece.
I recently went out and bought myself a new computer that uses Windows XP and can be upgraded to Vista. At any rate this caused me to start looking at the new office suite M$ is coming out with namely Office 2007.

Not all that long ago M$ came out with BCM (Business Contact Manager) for Outlook 2003 and I just read that starting with the Small Business version of office BCM will be included standard. BCM is M$ attempt to create their own CRM program for Outlook and after looking at it I have to say it sucks! Actually, in a sense it’s like the regular Outlook program with BCM addon built inside of it, in other words a program within a program. There is almost no way to customize anything and I couldn’t help be think of how customizable my Maximizer 9 was with user define fields, etc. For some reason it seems that the entire world are hooked on M$, and particularly Outlook, like a drug as though there was no other alternative.

I mean I just don’t get it, I still don’t really see the reason for why there needs to be so much Outlook integration in Maximizer outside of the extended Mapi feature, I mean who cares! Outlook to me, outside of email, is useless for anyone other than the average Joe who needs an address book. I picture all these people going out there an purchasing Outlook for $XXX.xx and then they have to go and by Maximizer or whatever to do what they “really” need done because Outlook can’t handle it and even though they can import their information into Maximizer they feel they have to stay with Outlook. Of course, I do realize that when the whole world seems to be using Outlook you sort of have to be able to integrate whether it make sense or not.

Then I see these other products that are for sale that to make Outlook really act like a CRM like http://www.teamscope.com/outlook/ or maybe http://www.avidian.com/ or something. The problem is cost, first you have to buy outlook and then the price of the licensing for these other products seems much higher than Maximizer and then if you want to back up your files, oh yeah, that’s another 3rd party product you’re going to have to buy. There seems to be this misconception that you cannot get by unless the product is Microsoft, but as Ernie Ball stated in Rockin On Without Microsoft: http://news.com.com/2008-1082_3-5065859.html?tag=lh

"I think it's great for me to be a technology influence. It shows how ridiculous it is that I can get press because I switched to OpenOffice. And the reason why is because the myth has been built so big that you can't survive without Microsoft, so that somebody who does get by without Microsoft is a story."

I know with Maximizer you still have to buy Outlook first if you want to use it, but at least you have the choice as Max will work with many free email programs! Integration with a Palm is talked about like Outlook is the only one that can do that seamlessly, but Max 9 sync’s with my TREO just fine thank you very much!

I just don’t get it.

Good article, as I would call it, bigguy. I agree. I dont think MS is the demon that many people try to say when they go overboard, but I also think MAX is much swifter, and intuative. Unfortunately, I wish Max would have less of a cartoonish calendar, and something more elegant and robust like outlook's calendar.

And on the topic of breaking free, you're perfect person to ask- have you used thunderbird with max? There are some of thunderbird threads over the months, but Im not sure theyre as conclusive as I would like to feel that thunderbird can do it all with Max. Thunderbird is getting quite good, and wouldnt it be a great candidate to let the reader break free from MS altogether? ( i.e. if youre company requires it, fine, but to install outlook just for a customer, or limited situations is, of course, a pain... )
Hi there maxmax
Yes, I currently use Thunderbird with Max 9 and personally wouldn't use anything else. The first argument that people will use comparing the 2 is that Thunderbird is simple mapi while Outlook is extended mapi. Well, as far as I am concerned, who cares!

I can't speak for anyone else except to give my own experience. The only thing that Outlooks extended mapi did for me was allow me to type emails using Outlook as the email editor. This allowed me to attach themes (eye candy) to the email to spice it up. The other thing was to allow the email to be composed in HTML, using the Max 9 email editor. For me this became a non issue as I discovered that many of the customers that I was sending the emails to were only allowed to send and receive their email in "plain text" by their place of employment. Additionally, more and more of my customers send and receive their email to me using a Blackberry or Palm Treo again meaning that the email is being received in a stripped down plain text.

Using Thunderbird I compose the message right in Maximizer and Thunderbird sends it in plain text. I have come to love this as for the majority of my mail I can get right to the point of what I am trying to say and send it, without the frills. In the rare occasion that I do want to spruce up an email I send it right out of Thunderbird, I can dress up the text to look great and as far a themes go, for the most part I don't need them. I also find that using Thunderbird the whole email thing chugs along much faster.

Another thing I learned was that Max 9 can log an email sent to a customer just as easy as using Outlook as the email editor. Replies to emails are not logged, but neither are they using Outlook either, even with extended mapi. The extended mapi feature is just showing you what is being stored in Outlook. When you back up Max 9 only the "logged" messages that you sent are saved. For the replies and the rest you have to back up Outlook, which can be challenging. I personally perchased a product for Outlook called abf backup, but since switching to Thunderbird there is a free backup utility called Mozbackup, here is the link http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

This utility backs up all my mail and serves me quite well.
Hey,

I would be curious to know how well Thunderbird actually works in Max. I have a few users that have that as there mail client but we aren't currently really using Max properly (in my opinion anyway).

I just thought I would tone in on Outlook a bit. There some good reasons for using Outlook as a client (not specifically to Max) a lot of organizations have an Exchange server which means outlook is your client since included in your user license and as far as I know is the only program that properly support MS Exchange. Exchange is also quite useful when teamed with a BES server. Whenever I send email on my Black Berry it is automatically stored in my sent items on the server, my calender update is automatic etc. and I have never plugged my device into a computer because it serves no purpose. It is a really powerful tool especially when your on the road boss calls and says I need you to call this new client I have added them as a contact and bing I just select them out of my black berry contacts because it has already updated before our phone call has finished.

I am not raw raw Microsoft or anything but I hardly used my BBerry until we got a bes server, but now its indispensable to me.
I've been away for awhile.
Yes, I use Thunderbird quite effectively in Max 9, Outlook in my enviroment seems "overkill". There is a lot of talk about the extended Mapi feature not being included in Thunderbird, but again I don't see this as a problem for a number of reasons:

1. Even though I use to use Outlook, I seemed to view my emails in Outlook more than in Max 9 anyway. Thunderbird has no problem display the inbox either.

2. It's only the messages sent from within Maximizer that log a copy to Max 9. If you reply from Outlook itself that is not recorded. Thunderbird works the same way meaning if I send the message from within Max 9 it still logs it.

3. Thunderbird is much faster!

4. A problem I discovered with Outlook is that if you send a message from Max 9 using outlook, and you don't have Outlook open, it will bring up the compose screen, but leave the Outlook process running in the background after you send the message. Then when you try and open Outlook you get an error. You have to close the process down from the Task Manager which is just an annoyance.

I would prefer to compose in Thunderbird even though I use plaintext. Has anyone gotten Maximizer to do this?
Hello

Loved your comments Bigguy!
I also use Thunderbird and Firefox and are pleased with it. I simply "hate" MS due their sypware policies. Is not my intention to destroy Ms ..lol ...see anti-virus German enterprise talking about it(won't say who).
Max works with thunderbird but the problem is as follows: if you try to contact MAX support ..forget it as I will not pay for such a service. I believe who buys a piece should have a convinient support. Well I am speaking about email support anyway...never seen something like that!!! Horrible!!! Tried USA and UK support teams.arggghh. And I switch from Act! to MAx...No maners, no reply etc... It is a shame although the MAx software is good.
