Hi, Great site :-).

I'm supporting a Small Business Server 2003 network. Maximizer 8 Enterprise (Pervasive) in workgroup mode is an installed application without a qualified support person. So it falls to me :-(.

I have two questions:

1. Updates.

Currently hotfix 1&2. I'm alarmed to see SR2, 3, and 4 - and even more alarmed that it appears that SR2 requires a complete re-install.

Please tell me that's not so :-). On all the workstations as well?

2. Do we have the right product?

These folks have 3 persons (each with their own address book), and a shared administrative assistant who needs access. Originally, (prior to client/server infrastructure and the Assistant) they used single user versions of Maximzer, and Maximizer support told us we'd have to go to the enterprise product. So we did.

Is this in fact true? Or can an address book be stored on a server and accessed by two users with a version other than Enterprise?

Thanks - Les.

Unfortunately, it is.

Yes.

Yes, Maximizer 8 can do that. Are you sure that there weren't other factors under consideration which influenced the decision to upgrade to Enterprise?
Hi Gord,

Thanks for the response.

The only reason they have Enterprise is because that was the advice given by Maximizer Sales at the time they put in their server infrastructure. When I look at the features that Enterprise has, and what they use - they definately don't have any need for Enterprise.

So long as the address books are on the server, and each address book can be used by the owner and assistant, they are happy.

I think Maximizer 8 requires less maintenance than Enterprise, so that's where we'd like to be headed. Another person in the same office uses 8, and it seems the Outlook integration works much better in 8 than in Enterprise.

I'm trying to convice Maximizer Sales to let them downgrade (crossgrade) to 8 from Enterprise, without spending more money ;-).

Thanks again - Les.
Hi, Les.

>I think Maximizer 8 requires less maintenance than Enterprise

What do you mean by "maintenance"? If anything I would suggest that Maximizer Enterprise is easier to maintain than Maximizer when storing multiple address books on a single server because Maximizer Enterprise keeps a Global List of address books.

That is probably more of a configuration issue.

Before you commit to that course of action, make sure that:

- Your users have not started using Maximizer Enterprise features that are not available in Maximizer, like the ability to save UDFs in a folder hierarchy.

- You can actually convert the address books from Maximizer Enterprise to Maximizer. (If you can't do it yourself then MSI can probably do it for you, but they might charge a fee.)

- Your current version of Pervasive.SQL is compatible with Maximizer 8. The WorkGroup version of P.SQL is okay, but the client/server version of P.SQL is only supported for Maximizer Enterprise.
If I can throw in my two cents here, I'd also question why you need a separate address book for each person. We started with about 5 address books (by province, by type of contact etc.) and after muuch pushing on my part we now have everyting in one. Easier to maintain, look for duplicates, better sharing of information, etc. The goal should be to have as few address books as possible, and simply use UDF's to group/select the contacts as needed.

As for Max vs Enterprise, all I can say is we have 8 users sharing a single address book and we're using Max 8. Works fine.

I was referring to the need to completely remove ME8 from the network to get to and past SR2 ;-). I was thinking at the point it was gone, it might be just as easy to go to Max 8. When ME8 was installed, Maximizer sales said M7 wouldn't work on a 2k3 network with data on server and shared address books, hence the ME8. Now I see M8 will work. They don't use any ME8 specific features AFAICT.

Yes, could be. I get good results with M8, but ME8 seems to be inconsistent with outlook calendar synchronization.

I've successfully opened ME8 address books with M8, thanks.

I think we're going to stick with ME8 for now, going ahead with bringing it up to current patch/SR levels and see how it works.

Thanks, Les.

Hi Rooster,

Yeah, there's no technical reason why they can't use a single address book. The users can't get their head around that concept, though.

I can see their point, to a point ;-). It's a group of independents, sharing the network resources, facility, and an assistant/receptionist. They aren't comfortable in the same address book.

Thanks, Les.
