Upgrade from Pervasive 7 to 12 Group

If you are upgrading to Group Edition you will not be able to properly deploy and benefit from the web components unless you have a proper Windows server operating system. This is because you need a fully supported IIS edition.

I've tried to use the IIS server in Workstation editions of Microsoft Windows in the past (which is not supported) and is much too painful. If you only want the Windows based parts of Maximizer (and Max Exchange) this can work on a supported Microsoft Windows Workstation operating system. Check the Support (menu)/Supported products page on the Maximizer.com website.

If your upgrading from pervasive you need to plan the data transition. We normally upgrade data to 9.5 before crossing to SQL. Your biggest issue is the fact you need to be able to run the pervasive and SQL on the same server to upgrade. Pervasive does not ship with 12 Group so it has to come from your old system disk.

Of course working with a Maximizer Business Partner on a deployment is a good idea as they should have seen these issue before.

What would you recommend I buy specs wise for a server or server software? Do I need Windows Server 2011 and do I need to buy SQL too? Thanks

Hi if you are upgrading to Group then you will not need to purchase SQL licences, you only need these if you upgrade to Enterprise.

Windows Server 2008 would be a good starting point. However, if you are buying small business server you will probably get 2011 which is fine, but in either case if the server is a small business server with Microsoft Exchange already installed on it Group is unlikely to work out of the box (for the web clients). For 2011, there is a KB on the Maximizer.com site which addresses some of the issues you may find.

OK, I have purchased and installed windows server 2008 and purchased and installed Maximizer Group 12. IT tells me I need to install pervasive db v9 on the server, which I tried to do from my old Enterprise 7 disc in the location it specifies here:

If you are upgrading from Maximizer 7, Maximizer Enterprise 7, or Maximizer Enterprise 7.5 run Setup.exe from the '\Max7\Common\DB_Engs\wge\' folder.

But it won't install, just kind of does nothing. Any idea why that may be? Thanks Dave

I should also probably say I installed the 64 bit version of Server 2008

OK, I got it to install, don't ask how, and I got the data converted, which went smoothly once the pervasive engine was installed.
