I finally got mamagement to upgrade to version 8. Does anyone have a migration checklist. I am going from version 5 to version 8.
I have 15 distribution sites and 25 LAN users.

I would like create a time line and see how many man hours its going to take.

How long does it take to build a distribution site and install it on a laptop??

Any database migration problems?? Dbase Size 4.5GB ??

Time it takes to install Pervasive on a server??

How long does it take to install Max8 on a workstation that is currently running Max5

Anyone has any tips or suggestions??

Thanks

Erick

Hi Erick,

We're on Max 7.5 but I guess some of our experiences may be helpful. Note that there is a Service Pack for Max 8 already available ;-)

We found Max 7.5 to be pretty straightforward to install and run. We upgraded from Max 6 and it was pretty much a question of pressing the buttons on the installer.

BUT, the guiding principle has to be to test full and then deploy.

Use a new machine (i.e. one that has not been used as your Max server before) and install all the server components on it. Take a copy of your database, and convert it on the new server. Test it thouroughly on that machine.

Then if possible get a handful of workstation computers, and install the workstation components, and test them out thoroughly. Build some distribution sites ditto.

One thing to be aware of is any other software you use that used Btrieve or Pervasive. The change from Btrieve 6 or whatever to Pervasive SQL is a big one, and you may find that other programs are affected.

My advice is to not upgrade anything except your main address book. Do everything as a new install. So, when you are ready to roll out your full deployment, uninstall Max5, rebooot, uninstall Pervasive (if 5 used it), reboot, and then do a clean install.

This is not to say there is anything wrong with Max's upgrdae routines. I have just learned the hard way to do things the simple, long way than to use short cuts Big Grin

Hope this helps,

I went from Maximizer 5.5 / 2000 to Maximizer 8 It was very easy to do the upgrade. There are some minor differences for me as I used the old Betrive 6.15 engine and this program uses Pervasive SQL V8 which is good. Make sure you install the Max 8 Hotfix and update Pervasive Service release 1 and apply the 2 hotfixes on the site before using your data. I would make some backup copies of your old data and keep them handy incase you need to start again. I also would encourage you to get the instructions on how to remove Max 7 and use the same techniques and remove each file that is listed in the instructions and regedit. Otherwise I think the program is very good. Any other questions let me know
