V8 max echange 8 email problem?

Hi I have purchased version 8 (max Enterprise)and are trying it out on a testing server before roll out. We have version 7 in use and have now problems.
I have loaded all Ver8 service packs.

I have followed all the steps in the book however the problem i am having is that max exchange is giving me this error when i try and send a packet.

"could not start mail. If you indend to use email as your transport method please make sure you have MAPI or VIm compliant mail installed on this machine and maxexchange must be configiured to log on under a user account ...can't read the rest.

never seen this before???????????

i tried using outlook 2002 then unistalled this and tried outlook express 6 (windows 2000 prof PC)
